The human body is a moving structure and most all muscular pain is rooted in the body’s struggle to hold itself up. When structural or movement imbalances exist or develop, muscles tighten to prevent collapse, creating blood flow blockages, causing tissue and joint distress, which if become too severe, sets off the "alarm" of pain.
Some cases of pain can be "triggered" by the nervous system's "heightened alertness" caused by things such as stress (manifests in shallow breathing), hormonal changes, air pressure changes, inflammatory foods, toxic air, allergic responses, sleep deprivation, dehydration, intense personalities, (also manifests in shallow breathing). etc., but these nervous system influences will usually only play a role in pain if the body is already contending with structural and/or movement imbalances that are creating too great of blood and oxygen deprivations. In other words, most muscular pain is a type of "straw that broke the camel's back" scenario, where imbalances build up overtime, until the body reaches its distress limit or "maximum imbalance threshold". Aside from prolonged exposure to severe toxicity, nervous imbalances rarely cause muscular pain on their own. In most cases, nervous system affects or "triggers" will only play a role in pain as the "last straw", after the body's stability and blood dispersements are already compromised, then causing the instinctive body to sound the alarm of "distress-overload" with pain. So even though one may be highly stressed, or be experiencing a hormonal change, or is sleep deprived, or is experiencing any other nervous system influence , if the body is structurally sound, with no areas of significant blood deprivation, pain is not likely to occur. Because pain will often ignite during stress, or is more probable with intense personalities, these factors are often mistakenly attributed to being its sole cause, which has led to those afflicted being made to feel ashamed, that their pain is "all in their head", which is never the case.
Because blood and oxygen are the most vital elements for life, where if enough loss or deprivation occurs, death will ensue in minutes, it makes sense that their specific deficits will have the greatest influence on the human body's "warning mechanisms". Blood flow and oxygen deprivation are always at the core of every muscular pain syndrome..
( You could say that blood flow is to the muscular system, what oil is to a car's engine. If not adequately infused, the "parts" deteriorate.)

Just as with all muscular pain, headaches can be, and often are triggered by nervous system affects. But headaches do not happen without excessive blood deprivation within the head. Headaches are caused simply by the neck's struggle to hold up the head. When it is struggling too hard, muscles tighten and blood flow is blocked. Upper back muscles that are tight, twisted or weak always play a role in headaches, both by blocking blood flow channels and not providing the strength the neck relies on to hold the head up. Muscles through out the body must be assessed to determine the cause of the upper back tension, twist or weakness. For example, it is not unusual for either severely tightened, or severely weakened calves to be the root cause of a headache. All muscles are linked and dependent on the strength and ease of the muscles beneath for their support.. (Migraine headaches are actually just tension headaches, where the muscle tension is more severe and unrelenting., causing more prolonged and more severe blood deprivation to the head, which then causes the severity of symptoms)
Massage is a healing modality, that is unequaled in its ability to heal physical pain and lower mental distress by deeply infusing blood through out the muscles, remolding the body's shape, while calming the nervous system, and at the same time, removing fear by helping the patient to understand the cause of their body’s symptoms, so that they can take a very essential, active role in healing. Identifying the imbalances that are causing pain and treating the "causes", and not just the "symptoms", with the only real medicine that can heal - blood and oxygen- is the key to ending pain... permanently!
